Dr. Timothy T. McMahon has been named to the newly created position of Associate Director for Clinical Affairs at the University of Waterloo, School of Optometry. Dr. McMahon will also serve as Optometrist-in-Chief of the UW Optometry Clinic System.
Dr. McMahon did his undergraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin and completed his Doctor of Optometry degree at the Illinois College of Optometry. He completed his residency training at the Kansas City Veterans Administration Medical Center.
Prior to coming to UW, Dr. McMahon served his entire academic and clinical career in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences of the University of Illinois, College of Medicine, most recently as tenured Professor of Ophthalmology. He has held medical staff appointments at the University of Illinois Hospital, The Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary, The Jesse Brown Veterans Affairs Hospital, and Michael Reese Hospital, also in Chicago.
Dr. McMahon has had a distinguished career as a Clinician Scientist. His principal research interest has been the pathobiology, genetics and clinical management of keratoconus, a degenerative disease of the cornea. He has held numerous grants from the US National Institutes of Health, including Direction of the NIH-funded, Corneal Topography Reading Center that has supported several multi-center clinical trials. He also served on the research team that investigated the contact lens solution-related outbreak of Acanthamoeba keratitis in 2006. He has published over 80 original research papers and 11 chapters and has served on the Editorial Boards of the journals Cornea and also Eye and Contact Lens.
In addition to his academic appointments, Dr. McMahon served as Secretary-Treasurer of his department’s Management Committee and also Chaired the Departmental Budget Committee. He also served as Secretary-Treasurer and a member of the Board of Directors of the American Optometric Foundation.
He has been named a Distinguished Clinical Fellow of the U.S. National Academies of Practice. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and Diplomate of the Cornea and Contact Lens Section of the Academy. Dr. McMahon has served on the Ophthalmic Devices Panel of the US Food and Drug Administration and, in 2006, he was elected to the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Optometry. Dr. McMahon will take up his new position on June 1, 2010.
